In February 2006, we began distribution of "AsahiGuard® E-SERIES". It offers the same high performance characteristics as our existing product line but does not contain perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), longer chain length-perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) or their precursors.
E-SERIES products do not contain PFOS, PFOA, their precursors, longer chain length PFCAs and their precursor. The E-SERIES is also PFOA free, formalin free and contains very few volatile components.
PFOA is used as a polymerization aid in the production of fluorinated resins and is contained in fluorinated water/oil repellant agents in trace amounts. PFOA has been detected at very low levels in wildlife, human blood and the environment.
AsahiGuard E-SERIES is the copolymer made of fluorinated monomer with 6 carbons in the Rf Group. The last chemical substance which is created by polymer and monomer degrading process in nature is PFHxA. In this process, the number of carbons in the Rf group changes from 6 to 5.
Diagram?
Compared to PFOS which has 8 carbons in the Rf group or PFOA which has 7 carbons, PFHxA has only 5 carbons. It is proven that PFHxA's toxicity and bioaccumulation is much lower than that of PFOS and PFOA.
The key ingredient of a fluorinated water/oil repellent agent is made by either a telomerization method or an electrolytic fluorination method.
AsahiGuard® E-SERIES' key ingredient is made by a telomerization method.
PFOS is the key ingredient of a fluorinated water/oil repellent agent made by an electrolytic fluorination method. It is also the ultimate decomposition product of PFOS based water/oil repellent agents, whose production has been discontinued.
Fluorinated water/oil Repellent Agent Mechanism of the characteristics
Water resistance happens when surface tension of the solid surface is lower than liquid surface tension. Fluorinated water/oil repellent agent made with Rf group easily resist not only water but also highly osmotic liquid such as oil.
Fluorinated water/oil Repellent Agent Common Application
AsahiGuard® E-SERIES is used for different types of materials such as woven fabrics, paper, non-woven fabrics & leather. It has been used in various applications such as sportswear, umbrellas, food wrappers, medical garments and automotive parts
Asahi Glass has completed registration in Japan, many countries in Europe and the United States. AG-E060 complies with FDA's Food Contact Substance Notification.
